The short of it

I was reading the fashion supplement in the Financial Times that this week has dedicated a huge article on the size of the Brazilian bikinis at the beaches of Ipanema and that in my opinion really didn't interest me at all (I really don't care the amount of lycra used to cover or uncovered Brazilian bums)!

What really struck me was the article just below... many of my male friends complain about how difficult it is for them to innovate with their outfits, a task many times frustrating and ungrateful. It's true that a lot has been done in regards to colour, tailoring, accessories for men thanks to the work and vision of great designers who opened the door to this fearsom universe so unkown and unexplored. Still, one clothing item remains a taboo after all these years: the city shorts!

In the opinion of many men, shorts are synonym of holidays, weekends with families and friends or even tourists. Gladly not for fashion designers Comme des Garçons, Giorgio Armani and Louis Vuitton, who see the well tailored city shorts the next summer's trend that is there to stay.

It will depend entirely on men if this trend is restricted to the catwalks or if it jumps to the high street... the first step has already been taken.

I don't see why men can't wear shorts as well! And maybe this is the American in me coming out, but if they're not too "slim" and hit at least the knee, I think they can look kind of cool. Granted, not the kind of thing that you can pull off at work, but why not amongst friends during the summer months? Guys deserve a little cool air on their legs too when there's no air conditioning in sight to be found!!

And one more thing... perhaps it's not the kind of thing we'll want to see on the catwalks (perhaps with the exception of the "cruisewear" collections), but I'd bet a large chunk of change that if enough designers dressed their guys all in shorts for their Spring/Summer collections, you'd see the trend trickle down into the streets. Tasteful shorts in a relaxed atmosphere during the summer months, I say GO FOR IT! :)

Liberate men's legs! Indeed, there's no (h)arm in showing up in classy, well tailored shorts for men in the summer. Yet, I definitely believe that this would raise another issue, which will need a lot of education: the shoes, and the socks that go with them...

Hey guys, I totally agree with you both: guys deserve a little cool air on their legs, but good taste is key with any city shorts combination :-)

Thanks for the comments!
